The article analyzes the basic principles of active listening, its differentiation from passive forms of communication, as well as the importance of empathy in emotional understanding and connection. At the same time, the role of rephrasing is presented as a tool for enhancing communication.

What is active listening?

Active listening is not limited to simply understanding the words spoken by the interlocutor. It is a deeper process, during which the listener tries to understand:

the meaning behind the words

the emotions being expressed or implied

what the other person finds difficult to express

Listening is done with “the whole self”:
👉 with the ears (words)
👉 with the eyes (non-verbal communication)
👉 with attention and emotional availability

Key characteristics of active listening

For active listening to be effective, it requires:

full concentration on the interlocutor

respect for their personal pace of expression

avoiding interruptions or premature interpretations

unconditional acceptance

genuineness in the listener’s stance

An important element is the use of clarifying questions, which help confirm understanding and prevent misinterpretations.

Empathy as a prerequisite for understanding

Active listening is directly linked to the concept of empathy, as described in Carl Rogers’ person-centered approach.

Empathy involves:

Understanding the other person on a cognitive level.

Emotional “participation” in their experience.

The ability to see the world through their own perspective.

👉 It does not mean identification, but understanding while maintaining boundaries.

Empathy, Identification, and Compassion: Key Differences

It is important to distinguish empathy from other concepts:

Identification → losing my boundaries and becoming confused with the other.

Compassion → feeling sorrow or pity for the other.

Empathy → understanding and connecting, without losing my position.

Empathy allows for a balance:
👉 participation in the experience of the other
👉 maintenance of personal perspective

When does true empathy exist?

An interlocutor functions empathically when:

is able to “step into the other person’s shoes” without judging

listens actively to what is said and what is left unsaid

accompanies without guiding

connects emotionally without identifying

The power of paraphrasing

Paraphrasing is a fundamental tool of active listening. It functions like a “mirror,” through which the interlocutor sees and hears themselves more clearly.

Through it:

understanding is confirmed

emotions are highlighted

self-awareness is enhanced

The basic types of paraphrasing

Echoing
Repetition of words or phrases in the same way

Summarizing
Rendering the main points of the speech

Emotional Reflection
Recognition and verbal expression of the emotion

Synthesis
Connecting content and emotions

Active listening and parenting

Active listening is a particularly powerful tool in the parent-child relationship.

Instead of providing immediate solutions, the parent:

helps the child to express themselves

encourages the child to understand their emotions

supports the child in finding their own solutions

Paradoxically, this stance:
 strengthens the parent’s influence
👉 empowers the child’s autonomy

The deeper meaning of listening

As John Gottman states:

“Listening means much more than gathering data with my ears… it means accepting and acknowledging your feelings.”

Listening, therefore, is not a passive process.
